Get a judge to the “aha” in under two minutes

The judges said value has to be clear fast, one thing done well beats many, and they love seeing which model does what. Today a judge lands on a sign-in screen, picks a demo role, and has to find the AI moments on their own. Three ways to fix that, sketched in our Expressive look.

Aha in under 2 min“If the value isn't immediately clear, points are lost.” (Jackie, Nebius)

Coach marks inside the app

A five-step tour that starts after “Try demo”. Each step dims the screen, spotlights one control and names the model behind it. Five steps: search, AI reply, request booking, treat check, daily note.

Why it could work

  • Teaches by doing, in the real app; the judge feels the product.
  • Model names sit right on the moment they act (routing, made visible).
  • Asse got the feedback “needs onboarding tooltips”; this answers it.

Why it might not

  • Every step needs a reliable state: the chips need the AI awake, the daily note needs a stay that demo accounts don't have.
  • Tours are skipped fast; judges hate being herded.
  • Touches many screens 8 days before the freeze.

A judge panel beside the phone

Picked

Play the judge panel ▸

On desktop, the empty space next to the phone frame becomes a short guide: one line about Goldito, four “Show me” steps that jump the phone straight to each moment, the model behind each one, and a QR code for phones.

Why it works

  • It's ticket #111 (the side panel judges see), already P0 and assigned to us: no new scope.
  • The app's screens stay untouched; the panel only links into states that already exist.
  • Model chips on each step are the routing picture the judges asked for, with no separate diagram.
  • Works the same in split view, and steps tick off so the judge sees progress.

Watch out for

  • “Show me: the daily note” needs a stay in progress; without one it opens the Draft instead.
  • Shared demo accounts: two judges at once see each other's messages.
Effort: 1 day (panel) + small deep linksRisk: lowTicket: #111

The “aha” before sign-in

The welcome screen plays a 20-second, three-card story: Chloe asks, the AI drafts the reply, the treat check catches chicken. Then two big buttons drop the judge into the demo as either side.

Why it could work

  • The wow lands in the first 20 seconds, even if the judge never signs in.
  • Pure frontend, no data or AI calls, so it never fails or waits.
  • The same three cards can open the video and the Devpost gallery.

Why it might not

  • It tells instead of shows; judges might read it as a marketing page.
  • Changes the first screen everyone sees, including real owners after launch.
  • Doesn't help once the judge is inside the app.
Effort: 1 to 1.5 daysRisk: mediumReuse: video + Devpost images

My recommendation: B, with C's three cards reused in the video. B lands in an existing ticket, never touches the screens we've just polished, answers “show the routing” directly, and is the cheapest to get right. C's story is still worth making as the opening of the video and the Devpost gallery, where it costs nothing to the app.
